Mercer Island schools are at a crossroads. With changes to state funding and the retirement of our superintendent, we have an opportunity for growth. I envision a student-first culture that celebrates equity and diversity. All children are unique and should be given an environment to grow to their best selves. As an Island community parent, advocate and volunteer, I have demonstrated success in making positive change for over a decade. As a professional, I have been a national leader, local mentor, and adult educator within a global company. I hope to use these experiences to serve the students, families, and teachers of the Mercer Island School District.
I have lived on Mercer Island for over 12 years and cherish this community. As a community advocate I have:
As a neuroscientist trained at top tier institutions, I have a passion for understanding how the brain develops. I started my research career at The Johns Hopkins Medical School and The University of Maryland School of Medicine, going on to receive my Doctorate in Neuroscience from Case Western Reserve University and subsequently completing an NIH sponsored Post-Doctoral Fellowship at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
In my professional career, I have experience in drug development and clinical studies at a variety of levels, from start-ups to global pharmaceutical companies. Currently, I am a Senior Alliance and Project Manager at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center where my focus is on building relationships and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously. I have also worked as a liaison between corporate clinical research teams and leading experts at top tier medical institutions on the West Coast. In this role I served as a national expert and leader, as well as an adult educator at the local, national, and global levels.
I have found my background and expertise are useful for understanding how our brains differ and how differentiated teaching methods can make all the difference for students. We are all wired differently and therefore learn differently. In both my career and personal life I have continuously worked towards improving the lives of others, and I hope to use these experiences to help serve all of the students, families and teachers of the Mercer Island School District.
